Training Room 1: Defining Health and Wellness
Introduction

What does it mean to be healthy? What does wellness look or feel like? Since 1948, the World Health Organization has defined health as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

In Training Room 1 you will study the following topics:
- Dimensions of Health and Wellness
- What Determines Health?
In the Training Room 1 Project you will create a presentation that reflects your understanding of the dimensions and determinants of health and wellness. Your presentation will express your personal definition of health and wellness. It is always a good idea to take a sneak peek at the training room project before you start the training room. Then, as you work through the training room, you can take notes that will help you complete the project.
Outcomes
Training Room 1 addresses the following outcome:
- evaluate the determinants of good health in Canadian society
- compare recognized international and national definitions of health and wellness
- describe the twelve key determinants of health as defined by Health Canada, providing specific examples
- describe how the determinants of health are used for evidence-based decision-making related to health care policies
- summarize the shared roles and responsibilities of individuals and governmental and community agencies involved in health care
Focus
Keep these guiding questions in mind as you work through Training Room 1:
- What does it mean to be well?
- How does society define health?
- What is your personal definition of health and wellness?

Dimensions of Health and Wellness
One way to describe health and wellness is to refer to the dimensions of wellness. The dimensions represent different influences on your total health and well-being, including physical, psychological, social, emotional, and spiritual aspects. The dimensions are interdependent—they are constantly interacting with each other.
There are many versions of a wellness wheel. Explore this interactive Wellness Wheel.
Self-Quiz
Develop a self-quiz for assessing personal wellness. Follow these guidelines:
- Your quiz should have at least ten questions and should allow participants to assess their wellness according to dimensions of wellness.
- You may or may not choose to use the same dimensions of wellness that were described above. You can use the questions in the interactive Wellness Wheel as a guideline.
- Your questions may be similar to the ones in the interactive Wellness Wheel, but you should use your own words and ideas.
- The self-quiz should lead to understanding of what makes up wellness.
There are many ways you could create your quiz. Check out Self-Quiz Sample.
Save your self-quiz in your course folder. You will need your quiz to complete Training Room 1 Project.
After you develop your quiz, answer the questions yourself to start formulating your own definition of wellness.

Discuss the following questions with a friend, family member, or classmate.
- Is it realistic to think that your wellness wheel will always be round?
- What happens if you are physically sick?
- How would illness affect the other dimensions of your wheel?
- How much influence do outside factors, such as family, school, work, or social environment, have on the balance in your wellness wheel?

What Determines Health?

John Foxx/Stockbyte/Thinkstock
According to Health Canada, healthy living means making positive choices that enhance your physical, mental, and spiritual health. At every stage of life, health is determined by complex interactions between social and economic factors, the physical environment, and individual behaviour. Learn what the Public Health Agency of Canada identifies as the key determinants of health in Determinants of Health.
Read through the Public Health Agency of Canada’s “Key Determinants: Underlying Premises and Evidence Table.” Pay particular attention to the evidence for each determinant. Which determinant caught your attention? Why? Is there one or more determinant you feel might be impacting your health status?

The dimensions of wellness and the determinants of health have similarities and differences. In a discussion with a friend, family member, or classmate, compare and contrast the dimensions and the determinants. Is one a better measure of health and wellness than the other, or do they complement one another?
The determinants of health are ranked by the Public Health Agency of Canada as most influential to least influential, in the order you saw in “Key Determinants: Underlying Premises and Evidence Table.” Which determinant do you think is the most influential? Why?
Your teacher may ask you to post your thoughts in a course discussion area and/or to respond to the posts of other students.
Determinants and Public Policy
The Public Health Agency of Canada and the World Health Organization have concluded that there is a direct correlation between the determinants of health and the health of individuals in a population.
Canada has adopted a “population health approach” to improving health care issues. A population health approach is based on the belief that factors outside the health care system significantly affect health. Canadian health policy attempts to address the inequalities created by each of the determinants of health.
