Training Room 1: Creating and Manipulating Data

Much of the information contained in this training room will be review for you. You will be introduced to templates and management of your workbooks. You may discover alternate ways to perform tasks or learn shortcuts to speed up your work. Feel free to repeat the training rooms until you are comfortable with the skills covered. When you are comfortable with the skills in the training room, proceed to the Time to Practise exercise.

 

In this training room you will

  • review the help features in Microsoft Excel 2007
  • learn more about the fill handle
  • review formatting data
  • split and freeze panes
  • review hiding and unhiding worksheets in workbooks
  • review changing worksheets
  • review inserting, deleting, moving, and copying worksheets
  • create a workbook from a template
How to Do It

 

This course is unique in that you will be working in Microsoft Excel 2007 throughout all of the training rooms. To successfully complete this training room, do the following:

  • Read and watch instructional videos to discover some of the main features of Excel 2007.

  • Use help and online references whenever you require additional instruction or software assistance.

  • Complete the Time to Practise 1 exercise.

Study the Microsoft Excel 2007 screen to see how the user interface has changed and learn about some of the new features. Open Key Features of Excel 2007 to familiarize yourself with some of the features, functions, and buttons in Excel 2007.

 

Using Help Functions and Online References

 

Resourceful, adaptable, lifelong learners know where to look for information. There are several ways to find information about how to use your spreadsheet software. You can

  • use the built-in and online Help function
  • access online resources and demonstrations through the Internet

Microsoft Online can be a wealth of information. Microsoft has developed a variety of how-to resources to support the users of Microsoft products. You can access training, demonstrations, webcasts, podcasts, and information on how to become Microsoft Office Certified. Microsoft Online can be a place where you go to refresh your memory or to learn a new skill.

From this point on, you will be doing the bulk of your work in training rooms. Each training room is set up in Microsoft Excel 2007 as a workbook. Once you have opened the training room, you will see a number of worksheet tabs at the bottom. Complete all readings and instructions contained within the worksheet before moving on to the next worksheet tab. Ensure that you have completed each worksheet tab and that you have saved your training room in your INF2080 SS2 folder before exiting the training room.

 

 

You are now ready to start working in Microsoft Excel 2007 to learn more of its features and use them effectively. Open Training Room 1: Creating and Manipulating Data, and follow the instructions, starting with the Help features.

Instructions

 

In this exercise you will apply all of the knowledge and skills covered in Training Room 1.

 

Read through the following instructions to see what you need to do to complete Time to Practise 1. You can either print these instructions or you can have them open alongside the Time to Practise 1 spreadsheet on your computer screen and work through them simultaneously.

 

Complete the following steps in order:

 

Step 1: Open Time to Practise 1.

 

Step 2: Change the name of the worksheet tab to the current year (e.g., 2010)

 

Step 3: Using the fill handle, fill in the next four months across the top.

 

Step 4: Using the fill handle, fill in the totals in column I as well as the totals in rows 7, 13, 19, and 25.

 

Step 5: Bold the headings in row 1 and change the font color.

 

Step 6: Choose another font color for the regions in column A and the cost categories (e.g., Labour) in column B.

 

Step 7: Bold and italicize all calculated totals.

 

Step 8: In Page Break Preview view, adjust the page breaks so that the first quarter—January, February, and March‚Äîwill be on page 1 and the second quarter costs will be on page 2. Then change back to Normal view.

 

Step 9: Freeze the top row and scroll so that all the information rolls underneath the top row.

 

Step 10: Save the file as Time to Practise 1 in your INF2080 SS2 folder.

 

Step 12: Open a template. If possible, open the Holiday Shopping Planner from the Planners category in Microsoft Office Online.

 

Step 13: Add five names of people you wish to buy gifts for, and save your template as Holiday Planner in your INF2080 SS2 folder.

 

Step 14: Open the Software Skills Checklist that you saved earlier and complete the chart for the skills you developed in this training room.

 

 

Once you are finished and have saved your work, submit your Time to Practise 1 to your teacher for assessment.

 

If needed, revisit Training Room 1 to review any of the skills in which you had difficulties. If you are confident in your skills and abilities, then move on to Training Room 2.
