Welcome to FIN1010: Personal Financial Information!

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just pick money from the sky whenever you needed it? Unfortunately, it is not quite that easy. It takes planning, knowledge, and goal setting to save money.

FIN1010: Personal Financial Information is a journey to discover your personal financial plan. You will explore such things as savings, banking, investing, income, expenses, budgets, insurance, credit, and debt. Many factors, such as the economy, government regulations, personal values, and beliefs, determine a financial plan. What are your immediate financial needs or wants? What about in the future?

When growing a garden, you need to know what you want to grow, plant it, tend to it, and then reap the harvest. A financial plan is very similar to gardening. This course is an introduction to various ways to grow your money to help you to achieve your future goals. A garden sometimes does not produce because of things beyond your control, such as drought, insects, or, perhaps, a personal problem that has taken needed attention away from the garden. However, with a little water, pest control, and awareness, the garden can still produce. This course will make you aware of the different outside factors that may affect your financial growth.

You will access a web-based program called “The City,” developed by the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada, to provide you with the most up-to-date financial information available. You will be introduced to several characters in different life stages and with different financial situations for you to explore. This website will require a login and password. If your teacher does not provide you with this information, you may need to self-register or contact your teacher for instructions.

The suggested completion time for this course is 25 hours. You may be able to complete it in less time, or it may take you a little longer. Completing the course should not take more than 32 hours, however.

Saving Your Work

After you have successfully logged into the “The City” website in Project 1, there are two different ways to submit your work to your teacher. If you have been given a class code by your teacher, you will need to enter it by clicking on the “Join a Class” button. This will let you submit completed work to your teacher electronically. If your teacher does not have a class code, check with your teacher for specific instructions on how to save and submit your work for assessment. This may include creating a course folder for your assignments and work.

Watch the “Creating Folders” demonstration. This demonstration will show you how to create a folder on your desktop.

Student Expectations

To achieve success in this course, read all of the instructions and work through the material carefully. Remember, it’s the work and practice you do that will prepare you for the assignments that are assessed by your teacher. Set realistic goals for yourself each day and stick to them. Do your work regularly and don’t forget to check your work before attempting your assignments. Careful work habits will greatly increase your chances for success in FIN1010.

You will be required to communicate regularly with your teacher. Constant communication with your teacher lets him or her know how you are progressing and allows you to discuss concerns or issues that you may be having. Communication can happen in the form of e-mails, phone calls, or other methods—whatever suits you and your teacher best.

Enjoy the course as you learn how to take control of your financial future!
