Introduction

Key Issue

To what extent do efforts to promote internationalism through world organizations affect nationalism?

Many of the forces that shape globalization such as trade, transportation and improved communications also shape the growth of internationalism.  Each of these forces increases contact among countries at both governmental and non-governmental levels.  Some people believe increased contact to have both positive and negative consequences.  It may promote internationalism and cooperation among countries but it may also erode the sovereign power of nation states.

Lesson 2020

McRae note:

This lesson's ideas are more important right now than they've ever been. But you'll notice that the examples used in the PowerPoint and textbook are not. So, although there's no assignment this week, try to see how the ideas in this old PowerPoint would fit today. It will probably help with the upcoming position paper!

Conclusion

The world continues to shrink as global communications and organizations become more prevalent. The days of sovereign nations, in some people's opinions, are going to end as nations must give up some of their independence to become members of supranational groups.
