Intro - Forces of Globalization
Key Issues -
How do collectives express who they are?
How are identities connected through globalization?
To what extent do identity and the forces of globalization shape each other?
In a globalizing world, identities are shaped by many factors. Pressures of homogenization and assimilation can challenge individuals and groups to give up parts of their identities, especially if they are a minority. One position is that it is natural for minorities to be absorbed into a majority. The issue of identity is more complex than a question of ‘fitting in’. In this section, students will look at some of the issues surrounding homogenization and assimilation to discover what extent citizens should respond to the challenges that globalization poses to identity.
Students will also investigate the impact of globalization on Canada's founding nations and cultural communities by deciding whether globalization has enhanced or weakened community identities.

CHOICE 1. One of the key developments in economic globalization has been the rise of large corporations such as Google, Exxon, Disney, Bombardier, Nike, Starbucks, Microsoft, McDonald's and Coca-Cola, whose operations extend into many countries. Some transnational corporations have budgets larger than those of many countries. Countries often go to great lengths to encourage transnational corporations to expand their operations within their territories, but critics worry that these corporations are so powerful that they threaten the ability of nations to manage their own economic, political and social affairs effectively. Be sure to include a bibliography that includes 3+ sources.
Research TWO of the following transnational corporations and identify opportunities and challenges each corporation poses to society (in other words, consider multiple perspectives regarding corporate accountability). Creatively and accurately present your findings in terms of the kinds of benefits and drawbacks (or negative impacts) presented by transnational corporations in aspects such as jobs, work conditions in foreign countries, secondary industries, exports, political interference, environmental costs, human rights and animal welfare, etc.
- Tim Horton's - There are over 3,000 locations in Canada, and more than 556 Tim Hortons Doughnut Shops in the United States
- Unilever – The world’s biggest food and soap company with outlets in 150 countries round the world, selling products as diverse as Omo washing powder, Lipton tea, Dove soap and Magnum ice-cream.
- Gazprom – The biggest company in Russia and the largest gas company in the world – and only a decade old
- Levi’s – The company that invented jeans, and has been in business for 150 years.
- Shell – The energy company that operates in 140 countries, and, through chain of petrol filling stations, claims to run the largest retail network in the world.
- McDonald’s – The world’s best-known fast food brand with over 30,000 restaurants in 120 countries.
Examples of ways to present your findings include the following:
- Chart analysis/Graph (include images)
- Power Point with images and explanatory captions
- Collage with explanatory captions
- Prezi that includes captions and images - https://prezi.com/
Be sure to include a bibliography that includes 3+ sources.
CHOICE 2. Chapter two is divided into four Globalizing Forces. Create a power point or prezi presentation ( http://prezi.com/) that includes the following information:
1. highlights of all four forces (a one-paragraph summary of each globalizing force)
2. a description of a current event that coincides with each globalizing force.
3. explanation of how each globalizing force influences your identity (positive and negative)
4. image that enhances each globalizing force.
5. a bibliography (to indicate the sources of information you used)
The four Globalizing Forces and a coinciding Current Issue to present are:
- Trade & Current Issue
- Communication Technology & Current Issue
- Transportation & Current Issue
- Media & Current Issue
Be sure to include a bibliography that includes 3+ sources.
CHOICE 3. The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is a political organization in Canada that promotes the economic, social and political goals of the more than 630 First Nations communities in Canada. The AFN uses media and communications technology to promote these goals. “Language is our unique relationship to the Creator, our attitudes, beliefs, values and fundamental notions of what is truth. Our Languages are the cornerstone of who we are as a People. Without our Languages our cultures cannot survive.” Research this issue and suggest some ways that governments, individuals and cultural groups can promote and revitalize languages. Which efforts do you think might prove most successful?

Present your findings in a creative way – Power Point with visuals, Poster, Speech, Song/Poem, Formal Campaign or prezi presentation - http://prezi.com/
Be sure to include a bibliography that includes 3+ sources.
CHOICE 4. You read about coltan mining in chapter one and banana production in this chapter. These two products show the negative effects between globalization and personal and collective identity. Choose another trade item (coffee, chocolate, jeans, T-shirts, electronic devices, etc.) and prepare a two minute documentary in the form of a power point, radio, video report or prezi presentation - http://prezi.com/
Your presentation should show...
- how the economic, political, environmental and social dimensions of producing the item links various aspects of the identity of the stakeholders.
- how the item reflects the economic, political, environmental and social dimensions of globalization.
- the positive or negative aspects of the forces of globalization where your choice of topic is concerned.
-
Be sure to include a bibliography that includes 3+ sources.
CHOICE 5. Research the following banana companies: Chiquita, Del Monte, Dole, Fyffes, Noboa and National Companies to decide which one has the most serious approach to ethical, social and environmental issues in recent years. In a short essay (1 page), present your findings and use evidence to support which company you believe to be the most supportive of worker rights.
Be sure to include a bibliography that includes 3+ sources.

Conclusion
Within this lesson you have studied how identity is affected by some political, economic, social and environmental dimensions of
globalization and how these forces have resulted in both challenges and opportunities for individuals and collective groups to assert
their identity. In the next lessons, you will explore the media’s impact on diversity.
If capitalism is fair then unionism must be. If men have a right to capitalize their ideas and the resources of their country, then that
implies the right of men to capitalize their labor. Frank Lloyd Wright
