Introduction

The textbook you will be using for this course is MathWorks 12, Pacific Educational Press.

LearnAlberta.ca is a protected digital learning resource environment that will be used in this course. To access some of the resources on LearnAlberta.ca, a password may be required. If you find a password is required, contact your teacher or school to get one. No fee is required to use LearnAlberta.

Create a course folder to store responses, assignments, notes, glossary terms, and formula sheet. This can be either a physical folder where you place hard copies of your work or an online or digital folder for electronic copies. Consult with your teacher to determine the desired type and location of this portfolio.

The Toolkit is a collection of resources that you will access repeatedly throughout the course. For example, you can access grid-paper templates and blackline masters that you may find helpful as you progress through the course.

You will be able to address the specific outcomes of the lesson.

You will be able to address the questions that established the inquiry for the lesson.

• You will find a list of tasks to complete in the lesson.

• Lesson Assignments and other activity sheets are provided to you in Microsoft® Office Word documents. For clear viewing of equations in Microsoft® Office Word documents, Euclid fonts are required. You can download the fonts from the following website if you do not already have them:

• This is a short question set to help you check your readiness for the lesson.

• After you answer each question, access the sample answer provided.

• If you have trouble with the questions, review the resources in Refresher.

• Activities in this section should lead you to identify and analyze patterns or trends, relationships, and concepts that will be addressed later in Explore.

In this section you will be introduced to theorems and formulas, and you will read through examples that will enable you to further investigate concepts or patterns identified in Discover.

• In Try This you will respond to a set of questions or complete a task as you begin to learn a new concept.

• Save all your responses in your course folder.
• Occasionally, you will come across a hint button: . When you do, scroll your mouse over the button to access a hint.

• In Share activities you work with a partner or group to exchange ideas and knowledge and to think about and respond to what has been presented in the exchange.

• This may involve communication using a virtual medium, such as e-mail or a discussion board, or a direct method, such as a phone call or a face-to-face conversation.
• Check with your teacher to determine the method used to connect with other students for Share activities and whether you are required to keep a summary of the Share activities in your course folder.

• Self-Check activities provide questions that you can use for practice to gain competency and to check your progress.

• After you answer each question, access the sample answer provided.
• If you struggle with a question, you may need to spend more time reviewing resources and you might want to talk to your teacher.

• In Math Lab you are asked to use the scientific process to explore a mathematical question.
• Save all your responses in your course folder.

• Throughout this course, you will encounter new mathematics terms that will be useful to keep track of as you move through the lessons.
• Use the document titled Glossary Terms. Save this document in your course folder. You will update this document throughout the module. For more information, refer to Glossary Terms.

• Throughout this course, you will encounter formulas that you will use to solve problems. It is useful to keep track of the formulas as you move through the lessons so that you will be able to review all of them at the end of the module and course.

• Use the document titled Formula Sheet. Save this document in your course folder. You will update this document throughout the module. For more information, refer to Formula Sheet.

• In each module you will complete a Module Project designed to help you apply your understanding of mathematical concepts and your problem-solving skills to real-world situations.
• In many cases, you will complete a part of the Module Project during each lesson.
• You will be directed to work in the Module Project near the conclusion of most lessons. However, not all lessons will have a Module Project component.
• Any project work you complete during a lesson should be stored in your course folder.

• This activity or problem provides a choice of challenging and enriching your knowledge and skills beyond the learning objectives of the lesson or the course.
• Check with your teacher to determine how you should complete Going Beyond activities. Save your solutions to Going Beyond activities in your course folder.
