Introduction

Key Issue
To what extent can internationalism effectively address contemporary global issues?

There are many contemporary global issues, many of which we have studied in this unit. These contemporary global issues include the following:

  • Climate Change
  • The Spread of Disease
  • Access to Water
  • Control over Water

The next step is to determine how internationalism has been used to address contemporary global concerns, and analyze whether it is always the most effective way of handling them.

LESSON

Many contemporary global issues are so complex that even national governments are unable to deal with them.  For this reason, countries often choose to work with the international community to tackle challenges such as poverty, hunger, disease, debt, climate change, human rights and conflict.

Millennium Development Goals for 2015

In 2000, the UN established eight international targets, its millennium development goals.

  • Eradicate Poverty and Hunger
  • Achieve Universal Primary Education
  • Promote Gender Equality
  • Reduce Child Mortality
  • Improve Maternal Health
  • Combat HIV/AIDS and Other Diseases
  • Ensure Environmental Sustainability
  • Global Partnership for Development

These goals, which were to be achieved by 2015, included reduction poverty by 50%, ensuring that all children have access to primary education, and combating diseases such as HIV/AIDS. By 2008,  it had begun to look as though none of these goals would be reached.

Missing the Millennium Goals: World fails to deliver on eight key targets

Does the fact that the world has not achieved the UN's millennium development goals suggest that international attempts to solve the world's problems are a failure?
