Have We Made a Difference?

Research the global action of one organization and present recommendations on the effectiveness of its global response. Work through the following steps:

Step 1: Select one organization and explore its response(s) to the challenges of globalization. Some suggested organizations are listed, or choose one of your own or one suggested by your teacher.

Step 2: Research the organization and the targeted issue (for example, hunger, poverty, HIV/AIDS, human rights, child labour, environmental degradation). Gather information to respond to the following questions:

• Does the organization contribute even indirectly to the situation?
• Does the organization benefit from the situation?
• Is this organization uniquely positioned to make a difference?

Step 3: Identify the type of response(s) from the list that follows:

• awareness building
• lobbying
• legislation
• agreements
• consumer activism
• corporate responsibility

  consumer activism: use of your individual purchasing power to influence the decisions and actions of a business

  corporate responsibility: the accountability of a business for its actions and decisions

Step 4: Evaluate the response(s).

• Create criteria to evaluate the response(s). Evaluate the group’s values, attitudes, and evidence of change.
• Evaluate the impact of the response(s) on the global issue, quality of life, sustainability, and prosperity.

Step 5: Report on the feasibility, impact, and effectiveness of the group’s global action.

Step 6: Present recommendations. Is it worthwhile to continue?

Present your recommendation in text, audio, or video format. Base your recommendation on your research. Use the information you gathered in Steps 1 to 3. Justify your recommendation according to the criteria you applied to your evaluation of the organization’s response.
