Fresh and Salt Water Systems Unit 5 Project

Due: June 6, 2016 (Last date to submit work for all subjects)

You may choose one unit project from any of the 8 unit projects to complete for June 6, 2016. Read all of the requirements and instructions carefully before handing in your final assignment. All assignments will be marked according to the following rubric:

Project Choices

Materials: All of the following projects may be created with any household materials that you are able to utilize with your parent’s permission.

Size: The project should not have a base size larger than 50cm x 100cm and be taller than 25 cm

Labels: The purpose of this unit project is to determine your understanding of the scientific information you have learned in this unit of studies. The labels that are used should be a vital part of the project and fully explained in the written portion of the assignment. Labels should be legible and placed accurately within your project.

Written portion: Your project must be explained in detail using scientific terms and explanations. Include an analysis of any design and construction issues that you came across as well as possible solutions for creating a better product in the future.

Choice #1 – Stream Profile Model (Individual)

Design and construct a 3D stream profile model that illustrates the different stages and characteristics of a stream. You must include: headwaters (sources), slope, stages, meander, flood plain, mouth, and estuary.

If you do this project choice, you must include a written summary that explains all the parts of your model.

Choice #2 – Retreating Glacier Model (Individual)

Design and construct a 3D glacier model that illustrates the different parts and landforms associated with it. You must include: esker, moraine, kettle lake, erratic, glacial stream, outwash plain, and drumlin.

If you do this project choice, you must include a written summary that explains all the parts of your model.

Choice #3 – Dam Model (Individual)

Design and construct a 3D dam model that illustrates the pre and post dam environments and the impact that a dam has on the environment. Impacts and consequences, both positive and negative must be identified and represented in detail.

If you do this project choice, you must include a written summary that explains all the parts of your model.

Choice #4 – Ocean Basin Model (Individual)

Design and construct a 3D ocean basin model that illustrates the different parts and landforms associated with it. You must include: continental shelf, continental slope, trench, ocean ridge, abyssal plain, crest, trough.

If you do this project choice, you must include a written summary that explains all the parts of your model.

Choice #5 – Freshwater Lake Diversity Puzzle (Individual)

Design and construct a puzzle that illustrates different organisms and zones that are found within a freshwater lake. You must include all the zones and at least 7 different plants and 7 animals.

If you do this project choice, you must include a written summary that explains the zones and organisms in your puzzle.

Choice #6 – Saltwater Ocean Diversity Puzzle (Individual)

Design and construct a puzzle that illustrates the different organisms and zones found within a saltwater ocean. You must include all the zones and at least 7 different plants and 7 animals.

If you do this project choice, you must include a written summary that explains the zones and organisms in your puzzle.

Choice #7 – Human Use of Water Game (Individual or Partner)

Design and construct a game that helps players understand the different ways that water is used and misused by humans. Your assignment submission must include the game itself, the fact cards or questions, and instructions on how to play the game. You can build the game by hand or use a computer program to design it.

If your game include question and answer cards or other written components, you do not need to include a separate written summary.
If your game does not include many written components, you do need to include a separate written summary of how humans use and misuse water.

Choice #8 – Travelocity Video (Individual or Partner)

Script and film a promotional video that outlines the benefits of 4 different vacation spots. The length of the promotion video must be between 30 seconds and 1 minute. You should identify the best vacation spots for each season of the year (summer, fall, winter, spring). The seasonal locations that you choose to promote should be based on the principles of weather and climate that are associated with water systems. Think of a catchy tune, phrase, or jingle that the audience can associate with, or be caught up in, as the video is running. Creativity and humor are encouraged.

If you do this project choice, you do not need to include a separate written summary because this information should be included in the script for your video.
