The Assignment
Step 1: Write a response to the following
essential question: How do poets engage their readers? In your response, be sure to refer to the poem you studied in your 3.1 Poetry Response assignment as well as a minimum of 3 poetic techniques. Not sure where to start? Review the Extra Help tab at the bottom of the page.
Tip:
Talk to the text and focus on how the poem is crafted (What figures of speech can you find in the poem? Provide examples and explain why they're effective in engaging the reader).
Step 2: Revise and edit your response. Remember, this is a public forum!
Remember: You should have at least 2 paragraphs in your response:
- 1 paragraph which discusses the
poetic techniques a poet uses to engage their reader (Review the Poetry tutorial and your 3.1 Poetry
Response chart)
- 1 paragraph which explores the specific techniques (you must include exact quotations) in your chosen poem (the one you used in your 3.1 Poetry Response chart) and how/why they engaged you
Step 3: Post your polished response to the forum. In order to receive a grade for this assignment, you must also respond to two peers' postings.
An essential question (EQ) is one that is β well - essential: important, at the center of the matter β the essence of the issue. EQs involve important questions that people think about throughout life. They are arguable and do not
have an easy or βcorrectβ answer: it is a concept formed as a question and initiates creative and critical thinking which suggests some deep thinking and inquiry is needed. The answer actually is based on your experiences and those of
others and as such will continue to change and develop over time. EQs exist beyond your experiences in the classroom.
Any response you write needs to have a structure. Usually, you begin by stating your opinion/belief to a topic or concept. Next, you would introduce the details you are using to support your opinion and explain/discuss how
your experiences or those of others you know demonstrate that. Essentially, use your experiences as βproofβ to support your ideas/opinions. Also use the text
(s)and tutorials from the lesson to support your ideas/opinions.
You want to determine your opinion and then choose an experience (and/or text) that fits with and supports your ideas.
- The first step is to decide what your thoughts are.
- The second step is to choose the details from your experiences and the lesson material(s) (the Poetry tutorial, Reading and Writing for Success) to support your opinion.
- The third step is begin! Start by stating your opinion/belief to the question.
- The fourth step is to introduce the details that support your opinion and explain/discuss how your examples and reading experiences demonstrate how a poet engages their readers.
- The fifth step is to conclude/complete your discussion in an interesting, meaningful way; you might tie your thoughts back to the lesson material(s) or use a quote from a text. Make sure to explain how that applies to how poets engage their readers.
- Post your 3.2 Essential Question response to the discussion forum.
