Essential Question
The setting of a story has an effect on characters that goes beyond what they do. It explains why they do it, how they are changed, and how they view their surroundings. Just like characters in a novel, where we live shapes who we are or become. A personโs environment can affect a change in them as they grow, change and evolve. For example, different areas of the country have different dialects, viewpoints, and expectations that affect how others see them.
In this assignment, you are to discuss How do one's surroundings influence who they are and who they become?
Introductory Sentence

This will be followed by a very short (one or two sentence) summary of your understanding of the big ideas.
The final sentence in your introduction will answer: How do one's surroundings influence who he/she is and who he/she becomes? This will be your controlling idea. (It should not focus specifically on the character and their experiences, but on all people.)
It might look like: Peopleโs determination and values are impacted by the people they surround themselves with.

The Assignment
Step 1: Select one of the short stories you read at the beginning of Unit 3 and review it for your setting annotations. Identify three specific details which will support the big idea. (The big idea is one's surroundings influence who they are and who they become.)
Step 2: Based on the experiences shared in the story, write a critical response paragraph that explores the following essential question: How do one's surroundings influence who they are and who they become?
Step 3: Submit your responses for assessment.
Determine your thesis and then choose an experience (and/or text) that fits with and supports your ideas. Remember: The focus is on all people; not you and not the character(s). You are looking beyond the text to human nature and behaviour.
Introductory Sentence
Begin with an introduction that will include: - Author, title, and type of literature your response will be based on.
- What the author is saying about how a person's surroundings influence who he/she will become.
Body
Once you have planned the introduction, the rest will flow from it. You must incorporate three quotations from the literature and explain how they support your ideas. In the next part of your paragraph,- Refer to specific details in the speech that connect to your controlling idea
- Explain how they relate to the topic (How do the character's experiences with their surroundings apply to all people? What lessons can be learned about how we are influenced by our surroundings through the characters?)
Concluding Sentence
Your concluding sentences will restate your main points and revisit your controlling idea/thesis statement as it applies to all people and how we live our lives. As humans, we all experience the same life lessons but not necessarily the exact same event(s). Donโt lecture and tell us what readers should doโฆ..instead, comment on your insights and what the situation has to tell us (all humans) about real life.- Name your assignment Lastname, FirstnameELA101_6.1Setting.
