Marking Guide:
In this assignment, you will begin writing a research report.
Do the following:
1. Choose one of the following topics or a topic of your own choice that relates to the novel you read in this theme. Write a research report about the topic using the information you and your teacher have chosen.
- Is the setting of your novel a historic time or place? Research this time or place.
- Did a real life event happen in your novel? Research to find out more about this.
- Conduct research on the author of your novel. Learn about the author's life, when and why the author began writing, and whether events in history, politics, or personal experiences impacted their writing.
- Click to access the Essay Planner document.
- Complete the two pages on the document to create the plan for your essay.
- Go to the Writing tab when you are ready to begin the first draft of your essay.
- Complete the first draft of your essay.
Remember that you need:
- an introduction paragraph containing your thesis (a main idea to communicate with your reader/viewer)
- two to three body paragraphs, each on a specific topic, to help you prove your thesis; this will contain lots of examples to prove your point
- a conclusion paragraph to summarize your most important points and to close in an interesting way
- Go to the Review tab when you are done.
- Review your draft by using the Self-assessment Rubric.
- Review for spelling and punctuation.
- Hand in to your teacher for feedback.
2. When your teacher has returned your draft to you, do the following:
Read through the suggestions you received from your teacher and ask yourself some questions:
- Does the rough draft make sense?
- Is there information that is missing or incomplete?
- Are there ideas that need more details to be clear to the reader?
- Are all of the paragraphs focused on the main point of the essay?
- Does the essay flow smoothly from one point to the next? Do you use transition words and phrases effectively?
- Use the revision checklist to review your work and make changes to your draft.
- When done revising, use this editing checklist to review your work once again.
When done, you will submit the checklists and your rough draft indicating your revisions to your teacher.
You will complete the final copy of your essay in the Theme Review.
