2.2 Final Assignment for The Arrival

Depending on your interests and the resources available to you, select one of the following tasks to complete your final assignment.

The Assignment

Option 1
Pretend that Shaun Tan is hiring someone to create a soundtrack to accompany The Arrival. As a music producer, you need to present a proposal that lists the songs and artists you think should be included in the soundtrack.

You should have a minimum of six songs. One song per section makes sense, but you are not limited to this approach. You need to include a copy of the lyrics. Be sure to consider carefully the order in which you list the songs, as they should follow the basic plot of the novel.
For each song, you must identify your rationale for selecting it, explaining how it connects to your perception of Tan’s message. You must refer to specific lines in the song, as well as details from the graphic novel. Your explanation should be at least one well-developed paragraph for each song.
Your proposal should also include a CD cover (of your own design) as well as a rationale of your artistic choices for the CD cover. You can draw your cover by hand or create it using whatever program you feel comfortable using (e.g. Google Slides, Powerpoint, or even a newsletter program such as Smore).
As you will be using someone else’s lyrics, you need to provide bibliographic information to indicate where you found the lyrics. See the Extra Help tab for tips on writing a bibliography.

Option 2
Pretend that Shaun Tan is hiring someone to create a poetry anthology to accompany The Arrival. As an editor, you need to present a proposal that lists the poems and poets you think should be included in the anthology.

You should have a minimum of six poems. One poem per section makes sense, but you are not limited to this approach. You need to include a copy of the poems. Be sure to consider carefully the order in which you list the poems, as they should follow the basic plot of the novel. You can include a maximum of three original poems (i.e. written by you) in the anthology.
For each poem, you must identify your rationale for selecting it, explaining how it connects to your perception of Tan’s message. You must refer to specific lines in the poem, as well as details from the graphic novel. Your explanation should be at least one well-developed paragraph for each poem.
Your proposal should also include a book cover (of your own design) as well as a rationale of your artistic choices for the book cover. If you are citing song lyrics from a website, format your citation as follows:
Name of artist (last name, first name). “Title of song”. Title of the website. Name of person/group responsible, date lyrics were added to the site (if not available, use abbreviation “n.d.”. Medium of publication. Date you accessed the site.
Example: Cohn, Marc. “Walking in Memphis.” AZlyrics.com. AZlyrics.com, n.d. Web. 27 January 2015.

If you are citing a poem from a website, format your citation as follows:

When you are creating your bibliography, be sure to list your sources alphabetically, based on the author’s last name (not the order they appear in your proposal). Check out Mohammed’s tutorial on Finding and Using Good Online Information for a sample bibliography and other helpful tips.

You can include an oral and/or video presentation of your proposal where your purpose is to convince Shaun Tan to accept your proposal. You can share your presentation on the phone, via email, on CD or as an online submission.
