4.2 Where in the World?
All action in film occurs in a particular place at a particular time, for very good reasons. We refer to this time and place as the
setting
in a text.
The Assignment
Identify several locations where action occurs in the film. Describe two
important places and consider how those settings influence the plot and
character development. If possible, try to observe how a variety of
characters respond to the two settings you choose.
Consider how the elements of the setting affect the senses. For example, does a character seem at home in his/her surroundings, or does he/she feel antagonized by the physical environment? How does the director use the setting to contribute to the character development and the story as a whole? Use a graphic organizer, like the one below, to record your observations. You can download a copy of the organizer in the Worksheets tab. Once you have completed your assignment, save it at Your Name 4.2 Where in the World and submit it for assessment. ![]()

![]() Assume you performed as one of the main characters in the film. From your character’s perspective, note how the setting affected your actions and character development in the film. Compare your reactions to the setting with another character. Speculate about the director’s intent in using the setting in terms of the film as a whole. ![]() View the rubric to see how your assignment will be assessed.
