6.1 Reader's Observations of Macbeth

The Assignment

It is time for you to read the play. Your textbook contains useful information to guide you through the play.

Again, try to listen to an audio recording or watch a performance of the play. There is an audio recording available through LibriVox. There is a multimedia edition of the available here chock full of great tools such as translations, videos, interviews.

1. Complete the Act Observation Charts that are in the Worksheets tab.
2. Once you complete an Observations Chart for each Act, complete the self-assessment quiz for that Act. You will find the quizzes on the following pages. Note: you must check your own answers on the self-assessment quizzes.
3. After you complete a separate chart for all five Acts, you will choose your strongest two charts to be formally assessed. Once you have chosen your two charts, save them as Your 6.1 Readers Observations of Macbeth and submit them for assessment.

How to Complete the Macbeth Observation Charts

What?	In this category, you need to show that you have been attentive to the *ideas and composition* of the Act. You will choose examples that are particularly significant to the main idea(s) Shakespeare develops in the Act. Try to move beyond summarizing what you read. Ask yourself questions about why the plot unfolds as it does. Consider the following: In your opinion, what is Shakespeare’s purpose for creating the Act? What is this section really about?
So What?	Connect personally to the main idea(s). How has this section of the play affected you? If you cannot relate using an experience from your life, try comparing this section to another text you have studied. The purpose of making this connection is to have you consider another perspective. It is another way to interpret and to attempt to understand the ideas at the heart of the text and the influence those ideas can have on your life.
Now What?	Look beyond the Act in the play and your own experience. Consider how Shakespeare’s ideas are relevant on a universal level, by connecting them to an essential question that frames the course. Respond to each question at least once in your study of the entire play. What influence do others have on who we become? How important is it to pursue our passions? What drives our need to belong? What does it mean to “live well”?
