This assignment is worth 50% of your final grade.
Prepare a research project on an economic issue challenging Canadian business. You may choose one from below (shown as either a general topic / or a specific instance of the general topic), or one of your own. If you choose a topic of your own, be sure it is an issue that is being discussed in todayβs media and political arenas. Before you begin, confirm your topic choice with your teacher.
You may prepare your project as a print document or a slideshow. In either case, be sure to include graphics, where appropriate.

- Protecting national economic interests against the United States / NAFTA negotiations
- Promoting development while respecting opposing interests / Trans Mountain Pipeline from Alberta to the BC coast
- Advancing the cause of human rights while promoting business interests / Canadian trade and human rights talks with China
- Profit and growth vs. saving the environment / Alberta Carbon Tax
- Public-private partnerships vs. government public services / Canada Post (reduction in household delivery, e-commerce)
- Private business vs. government intervention and controls / Legalization of marijuana and federal/provincial division of associated taxes
- Unethical treatment of employees / Sexual harassment in the workplace, #Me Too
2. Your presentation should include
- a title page;
- an introduction that describes or defines the issue and the effect it has on an economy;
- a brief history of the issue;
- the present state of the issue (including information from a public platform, gathered from within the past 12 months);
- the future of the issue (focus on your opinion on where the issue is heading); give at least two reasons for your forecast, and how that forecast will affect the economy in the future;
- a brief concluding statement that summarizes the issue as it is in today's economy; and,
- a citation page.
