In this project, you will design an advertisement that explains a fossil fuel fluid technology. You are required to submit this project to your teacher for marks. Very carefully, read the
whole project and how to do it. Be sure to read the requirements and rubric,
they explain the expectations for this project and how it will be
marked. Click here if you need tips on how to create a good project!
Situation
Some fossil fuel extraction and transportation methods are very controversial, including natural gas pipelines, bitumen pipelines, oil sands extraction, and fracking.
The energy regulator in Alberta wants to inform the public about the benefits and risks of fossil fuel extraction and transportation technologies. They want people to have accurate information on both sides of the issue so communities and companies
can make informed decisions that are good for both the economy and the environment.
The energy regulator wants input from young people such as you on how best to communicate information about fossil fuel extraction and transportation technologies to teenagers.
Project Task
Design a public education advertisement aimed at teenagers that explains clearly how one fossil fuel fluid technology works, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the technology.
Before you begin your advertisement, ask yourself these questions:
What fossil fuel fluid technology do I want to research and advertise? You must choose a machine or technology that either extracts the fossil fuel from underground or moves it across the country. Examples include natural gas pipelines, bitumen pipelines, oil sands mining vehicles, oil sands extraction, and fracking.
How am I going to find more information about my chosen fossil fuel fluid technology? How will I include fluid properties (viscosity, density, pressure and solubility) and how this affects the technology I have chosen?
How will I explain this issue clearly in a balanced and informative way?
Method
Research your chosen fossil fuel technology. Sources of information include the following:
News articles in newspapers and magazines or other publications
Websites
YouTube videos
Interviews with adults who work in the oil and gas industry
Interviews with adults who work in the environmental protection industry
Construct three tables to collect information. One table will summarize how the technology works, the second table will summarize the advantages of the fossil fuel technology, and the third table will summarize the disadvantages of the technology.
You can create your own tables if you wish, or, you can download the following prepared file and fill them in: DOWNLOAD this document.
The three tables must contain information summarized in your own words. Beside each piece of supporting information, list the source of the information. For example, insert the URL of any websites, book titles and authors, newspaper names and dates of
publication or names of people interviewed as your sources.
You must submit the three tables with your advertisement.
Choose the way you would like to communicate your advertisement. Here are some ideas from which you can choose:
Write an information brochure.
Build a website.
Draw a poster containing written information.
Video a TV commercial.
Record a radio ad or podcast.
Write a newspaper article.
Use some other creative idea, but check with your teacher first!
Requirements
You must communicate clearly the following information in your advertisement however, you cannot just copy and paste from various websites, but must write about the technology in your own words.
Describe how the fossil fuel technology works. Which fluid principles of density, viscosity, solubility, and pressure are used in the technology?
Describe the advantages of the fossil fuel technology. How does the fossil fuel technology help humans and the environment?
Describe the disadvantages of the fossil fuel technology. How does the fossil fuel technology harm humans and the environment?

Submitting Your Work
If you print your work and/or do pencil drawing(s) on another piece of paper, you must scan your work to submit it.
If you have prepared any other electronic images or documents for this project, you must submit them.
If you have used an Internet location where your work is located, you must submit the URL so your teacher can view your work.
When you are ready to submit your completed project, click the "Add submission" button at the bottom of this page and follow the directions. If you would like to view a tutorial on how to submit your assignment, click here.
Note that when you submit anything to your teacher, PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR NAME IN THE DOCUMENT TITLE. For example, you might title it something like this:
