In this project, you will create a health brochure that explains how a particular disease affects the body. You are required to submit this project to your teacher for marks. Very carefully, read the
whole project and how to do it. Be sure to read the requirements and rubric,
they explain the expectations for this project and how it will be
marked. Click here if you need tips on how to create a good project!
Situation
Many patients are diagnosed with diseases that they donโt understand. Medical offices often have brochures that doctors and nurses can give to patients to help them understand diseases better.
Your task is to design an informative medical brochure for patients about a disease.
Project Task
Research a disease and design a brochure that explains how this disease affects organ systems in the human body.
Your brochure design should explain the disease in a clear straightforward way. It should explain how the disease impacts the human body negatively and what options are available for treatment.
Before you begin your disease brochure, ask yourself these questions:
What do I know about healthy human body functioning? If I donโt know, how will I review this information?
How can I communicate information about the human body in a way that is easy for people to understand?
Method
Choose one of these diseases to research. You might want to use an Internet search engine to find out some information about each disease before choosing one.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
Angina
Arrhythmia
Atelectasis
Brain aneurysm
Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease
Crohnโs Disease
Diverticulitis
Epilepsy
Hepatitis B
Ischemic stroke
Multiple sclerosis
Parkinsonโs disease
Pleurisy
Pneumonia
Tuberculosis
Research your chosen disease. Sources of information include the following:
Reference books
News articles in newspapers and magazines or other publications
Websites
YouTube videos
Interviews with adults who work in the medical industry
Construct a table to collect information.
The table must contain information summarized in your own words. Beside each piece of supporting information, list the source of the information. For example, insert the URL of any websites, book titles and authors, newspaper names and dates
of publication or names of people interviewed as your sources.
You must submit the research table with your disease brochure.
Choose the way you would like to communicate your brochure. Here are some ideas from which you can choose:
Draw pictures and diagrams in your brochure. Draw with pencil and paper, or use a computer drawing program such as Adobe Photoshop or Gimp.
Write the story of a patient affected by the disease in your brochure.
Create a comic strip explaining the disease in your brochure. Draw with pencil and paper, or use an online comic creator app.
Make an online website brochure.
Use other creative ideas, but check with your teacher first!
Requirements
1) You must hand in your research tables that clearly show where you collected your information. 2) In your brochure, you must communicate clearly your responses to the following questions about your disease. Do not just copy and paste from websites, but write it in your own words!
What are the symptoms of the disease? List all of them.
What causes the disease? Is it inherited?
What organ systems does the disease affect? Using the vocabulary you have learned in this unit, describe in detail how the disease affects these organ systems.
Is this disease preventable? If so, how?
Are there treatments and cure available for the disease? If not, how do patients deal with/lessen the symptoms of the disease? If there is a cure, explain in detail what it is and how it affects the various organ systems.
Note that when you submit anything to your teacher, PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR NAME IN THE DOCUMENT TITLE. For example, you might title it something like this:
