Information Search!
For this activity, you will need a piece of paper and a pen OR a computer to record the information you find.
First site to visit:
The first place you are going to go online is called ALIS — Alberta Learning Information Service. This website provides accurate information on almost any career you can think of!
- Click here to open the ALIS website. You can take a look around the site if you wish to see what ALIS has to offer.
- When you are finished looking around the site, click here to start exploring the occupations.
- Click into the Occupation tab in the search area at the top.
- Type the name of your chosen career into the keyword search space.
- [NOTE: Once you start to type the name of your career, names will appear in a drop-down menu that will help you to choose the correct one.]
- Be sure that you have clicked on or chosen the correct career (e.g., hairstylist).
- Click on View Full Profile. This will give you information on your chosen career including: educational requirements, wage and salary, employment and advancement, and certification required. Print the information you find as you will need it for your report.
There will be a number of pages of information. Read through them and find the information about:
• DUTIES
• WORKING CONDITIONS
• PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
• EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
You will use this information in your career research project, so be sure to keep it stored safely.
If you have trouble finding your
career at this site, ask your teacher for help.
Second site to visit:
The second place you are going to look for information is AlbertaCareers.com. This website provides information on WHERE to find work in the province of Alberta.
- Click here to open the AlbertaCareers.com website.
- Type in the name of your chosen job in the keywords area (e.g., welder).
- Type in the location (e.g., Edmonton).
- Click on Find Jobs.
- Have some fun searching for information on your chosen career.
- Using this site and the information that you found, record four to five points for the career that you chose (e.g., skills you will need, location of the job, etc.). You will use this information in your career research project, so be sure to keep it stored safely.
If you have trouble finding your career at this site, ask your teacher for help.
NOTE: Depending upon the career you have chosen, there may or may not be jobs posted on the albertacareer.com website. If there are no jobs listed, use your ALIS information.
