Lesson 14 — Activity 2: Assignment

To complete this assignment, you will need a piece of paper and a pen or you can use the computer to start typing up your report. Remember to keep your work in a safe place as you will need it for an upcoming activity.

Follow the instructions below to create your introductory paragraph for your career report.

Topic Sentence:

Remember that a topic sentence states your topic and has a controlling idea.

Example:

A career in hairstyling is something I have been thinking about pursuing for quite some time now.

Now it's your turn!

You are now beginning the rough draft of your career report! If you do it on a computer, save it! If you write it on paper, don't lose it!

1. Write a topic sentence similar to the one above but use your own career and a controlling idea that shows you interest in the career you have chosen.
2. Locating research to help write the introduction: The remainder of the paragraph will focus on the areas you will talk about in the rest of the report. Do you remember the "supporting details" in the cheeseburger from the previous assignment?

• duties of the job
• working conditions
• personal characteristics
• educational requirements
• any other important or interesting information that you found
  

Writing the rest of the introduction:

Now it's time to write the rest of the introductory paragraph using the areas above.

Example:

A career in hairstyling is something I have been thinking about pursuing for quite some time. There are four main areas to consider if you are looking at a career in hairstyling. Duties, working conditions, personal characteristics, and educational requirements are all areas that need to be explored. Other interesting things to consider about this career are where the jobs are for hairstylists in the province of Alberta and how much they make.

Now, it's your turn!

1. Using the sample introductory paragraph above, write your own introductory paragraph for you career report. Use the topic sentence you have already written.
2. Make sure you mention the things you researched. Your introduction will list exactly what you are going to talk about in the rest of the report.
3. Take some time now and write the rest of your introduction.

Congratulations! You have just written the introductory paragraph to your report! You started small with a topic sentence and introduction, and you are building a report! Make sure you save it if you have typed it on a computer. If you have written it on paper, put it somewhere where you will not lose it!

The next activity will have you writing individual paragraphs on each of the items mentioned in your introductory paragraph. When you break up the parts of a report into manageable chunks like this, it makes writing quite simple!
