Theme 5 - Final Activity — Book Talk
Completion requirements
For your final activity, you will complete a Book Talk on the novel The Middle of Everywhere. One of the best ways to find a new book to read is by word of mouth. Sometimes we get excited about reading if a friend tells us about a book that they really liked. A Book Talk is an opportunity for you to share the book that you have read with others. Your job is to capture the attention of your audience and, by the end of your Book Talk, have them wanting to read your book!
For this final assignment, you will decide how you want to present your Book Talk. For example, you could choose one of the following formats:
- write a report
- write a diary entry
- write a newspaper article
- write a letter to a friend or family member
- create a collage
- create a comic strip
- create your own book jacket (one that is different from the original) — your book jacket must have a front and back cover with all of the elements a book jacket would have
- put together a PowerPoint presentation
- use another format that you have chosen
Before you begin working on your Book Talk, discuss with your teacher the format that you have chosen.
You must address all of the following in your presentation:
- Introduce the book, The Middle of Everywhere, in a creative way. Be sure to state the title, author, and the genre of the novel.
- Briefly summarize the book without giving away the ending. Provide information that will make your audience want to read it too!
- Describe the main characters from the book. Who are the protagonists/antagonists? What was their role within the story?
- Describe the setting of the book. Tell your audience when and where the story took place.
- Tell your audience about some ways in which you connected with the novel.
- Tell about the underlying message/theme that you thought your novel was trying to communicate.
