The shopping carts in the grocery stores are generally much smaller than the ones we are used to in Canadian grocery stores.
The cart is short in length and has a tray-like area to set a hand basket onto it. Then you push the basket on the cart down the aisles.
When you get to the cashier, you take the basket off the cart and set the basket on the counter. There is an empty basket on the counter. The cashier takes your item out of your basket, scans it and then puts it into the empty basket. Depending on the store policy and training of cashiers, the cashier may repeat the price of every object that is scanned.
There is a plastic tray with a little half bowl attached to the cash register. You put your paper bills on the tray and the coins in the little bowl (which makes it easier for the cashier to scoop them up).
Then you take the basket full of your items and head over to the bagging area. Depending on the size of the grocery store, the bagging area may be many different tables or just a counter area for you to set your basket down and pack your things into bags.
