Assessment 1
The Canadian Supreme Court coat of arms contains a number of visual symbols. At the top are the scales of justice. These show evidence is carefully weighed before making decisions. The black colour represents the judges' robes. On the crown are Canadian maple leaves and fleur-de-lis to show British and French laws. The scrolls at the centre of the shield represent the rule of law: the Constitution, Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and Aboriginal Treaties. The animals are a combination of Canadian animals: caribou, raven, and salmon. At the bottom are the words: Equity, Droit (the French word for Right), and Admiralty which stands for the Law of the Sea.
