People produce garbage every day. This garbage, also known as waste, must be taken somewhere after it is thrown out. In most Canadian communities, waste is taken to facilities where it is sorted, recycled, reused, or disposed of
in many ways.
Not all waste is produced by people. Some waste occurs in nature and is recycled by nature.

1. What does waste (garbage) mean to you? Answers will vary, but here is my answer:
- Things that cannot be re-used, or recycled. Things that I have to put in the garbage and they will end up in a landfill near my home. Things that I try to reduce having in my life.
2. What are some examples of waste? Answers will vary.
- Plastic shampoo bottles.
- Packaging that toys, food, etc. come in (sometimes this can be recycled).
3. What do we do with waste in our society (your community)? answers will vary, depending on where you live, here is my answer.
- My waste needs to be taken to a landfill. I put it in garbage bags and take it there myself.
- I try to reduce the amount of waste that goes to the landfill, by composting and recycling everything that I can.
4. Do you think we are doing a good job with waste? Explain. Answers will vary.
- I know that I could do a better job with my waste. I could probably find more ways to re-use things, rather than buying new things, with new packaging.
- In general I think people around the world are starting to realize that waste is a real problem, and trying to make it better.
