Assignment

Step 1 Examine your annotated reading of all four short stories ("On the Rainy River," "Two Words," "Touching Bottom," and "The Shining Houses"). What elements (plot, character, setting, conflict, tone, mood, theme, symbolism, word choice) have been color-coded/highlighted the most often in each text? See the exemplar.

Complete the first table provided in the Document Links below. (Be sure to see the exemplar. For help on short story elements, see your English Language Arts Handbook, pp. 208-212.)
Step 2 Choose two of the short stories to continue analyzing.

Complete the second table where you will indicate the top 3 elements for these two stories. Beside each element, provide at minimum, 3 supporting quotations from the text. (For help, see the Exemplar.)
Step 3 Submit
  • The two completed tables for formative assessment. (Do not write the paragraph yet.)
  • The four short stories showing your annotations. If you annotated the stories in Google docs, ensure that the share settings are set to "Anyone with the link can view."
    • Option 1: Copy and paste the sharing link(s) into the online text space in Moodle.
    • Option 2: Record the Google docs links in the first table in the space provided by the title.
