Unit 1
What is
Courage?
“Mia’s Problem” is a fictional story – someone made it up.
One way we can tell if a story is fictional (Not true) is by looking at the pictures.
The pictures in Mia's Problem are drawings, not photos of real people.
Real-life events are stories (Non-fiction) that actually happened.
You may have read about a true story or you may have seen one on TV.
Real-life events can be found in many places.

- The book covers you see on page 8 of Literacy in Action tell about real-life events (Non-fiction) that involve courage. Maybe you can find them or other books about courage in your local library? To find real life (Non-fiction) books about courage at your local library, search the library card catalogue for "juvenile courage non-fiction". Or, just ask your local librarian for help.
- The illustrations on page 8 of Literacy in Action also show an internet website and a movie, two more places you can learn about real-life events. But, be very careful, there is a great deal of information on the internet that is presented as being true but in fact is not.
- Newspapers are full of real-life events. Look in your local newspaper, or try this link: CBC Kids News.
