Reading The Selection
A
collection
of jokes called Have Your Heard This One? has been added to this selection.
These jokes make us laugh because of the different techniques used. Some of the techniques you saw in selections so far are silly pictures, funny language, puns, funny names, silly situations, foolish behaviour, confusion in one or more characters – not "in on" the joke, a character in the "wrong place", surprise ending, unlikely situations, and point of view.
Here is an example, using the joke Samara told on page 92:
The joke: What do you call a dog that likes to run all the time? A jog dog!
What's the technique? The author of the joke made a silly rhyme using a word – jog – that we don't usually think of when we talk about dogs.
In this assignment, your job is to figure out the techniques used in the different types of jokes you read in Have You Heard This One?
