Imagine that you work for an architectural firm that has been asked to design a new school that incorporates a First Nations world view.
Your job is to:
- Create a blue print (drawing) of the inside of the school, showing how the school reflects First Nations cultural elements. (20 marks
- Decide where in Canada this school will be built (1 marks)
- Included in this will be a drawing of a mural that will be on display somewhere in the building that depicts ideas of First Nation origins (10 marks)
- Create a blue print of the outside of the school, showing how the school reflects First Nations cultural elements (10 marks)
- Create a blue print of the school yard, showing how the school's surroundings reflect First Nations cultural elements (10 marks)
- Appropriately name the school (1 mark)
- Acknowledge the territorial land where your school is built (4 marks)
- Choose and name an appropriate school mascot (4 marks)
You must include a written description of your design that details the symbolism and values that you have chosen. You may select a certain culture to focus on, or bring in a combination of ideas from many groups. You will likely want to think about who the students for your school will be and make your choices accordingly.
You might want to research a few schools that have already demonstrated the ideas you are trying to include; including Oski Pasikoniwew Kamik on the Bigstone First Nation in Wabasca, Alberta Ermineskin Junior- Senior High School in Maskwacis, Alberta, and Crowfoot Elementary on the Siksika First Nation, Alberta.
