In Try This 3, you may have noticed that multiplying a rational expression like  by  produces an equivalent rational expression,  . Multiplying a rational expression by a fraction equivalent to 1 will always create an equivalent expression. However, by multiplying by a variable, you may introduce new non-permissible values.

 

How did you know the two expressions were equivalent? Because  Therefore, by the property of 1, the expressions are equivalent for t ≠ 0, −2.
