Module 6: Sinusoidal Functions

In Try This 2, you may have noticed that the midline and amplitude are related to the maximum and minimum by the following equations. Given the graph of a function, the formulas can be used to determine the amplitude and the midline of the function.

Try This 3

This shows two graphs. Graph 1 shows a sinusoidal function with a minimum value of negative 3 occurring at 120 degree intervals. The maximum value is negative 1 and it also occurs in 120 degree intervals. Graph 2 shows a sinusoidal function with a minimum value of 2 occurring at 72 degree intervals. The maximum value is negative 6 and it too occurs in 72 degree intervals.

Use the graphs to answer the following questions.

  1. Determine the period of Graph 1.
  2. Estimate and then determine the period of Graph 2.
  3. Did you use different strategies to determine the period for Graph 1 and for Graph 2? Explain.
