Lesson 1.3.2

Lesson 2 - Saturated and Unsaturated Hydrocarbons

Get Focused

Carbon can be bonded with single, double, triple or even quadruple bonds. In order to be able to accurately discuss these various molecules, a system of naming has been developed. In this lesson we will investigate the nomenclature of saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons.

Consider the following essential questions as you complete Lesson 2 :

  • What is an alkane ?
  • What is an alkene ?
  • What is an alkyne ?
  • What is an alkyl group ?
  • What are the naming conventions for the naming of hydrocarbons
