Unit 5 Discussion

Environmental Issues

Environmental issues such as water and air pollution, climate change, and the greenhouse effect are very complex. Solving these environmental problems is challenging.

Environmental damage is not the problem or concern of only one nation. Natural occurrences such as water currents and wind patterns carry pollution from one location to many other areas of the globe. Because of this reality, many people suggest that viable solutions to the world's environmental issues will only be possible when the world community works together and makes the commitment to change.

Attempts have been made by some countries to reduce pollution. The Kyoto Protocol is an example of such an attempt. One of the criticisms of these attempts is that participation by countries is optional. Countries do not have to participate in any agreements and cannot be forced to sign any legislation.

Should all countries be forced to participate in agreements that will address environmental issues facing the world?

Consider the following questions when taking your position.

    - Should independent nations be forced to participate in any agreements?
    - How would it be possible to enforce participation in and ultimately compliance with any agreements?
    - Will solutions to these serious environmental issues be possible without global involvement and cooperation?
