Social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, can provide valuable opportunities to maintain social relationships. You can join or follow groups that share your interests. These different social media sites also allow you to keep a running diary (although public) of your thoughts and experiences.
Social media is all about communication. Your words influence others; others’ words influence you. In a positive sense, you can learn from each other and build a sense of community with people who share your interests. In a negative sense, messages can be destructive, if you let them.
Online forums allow others to share unique ideas you may not have considered previously. For example, TED and TEDxTeen bring together speakers from all over the world, allowing you to not only hear ideas but share your opinion and contribute to discussions with others across the globe. Throughout this course, you will see many TED videos that will inspire and challenge you.
