UNIT 1

As you enter adolescence and your hormones start to change, you will begin to feel attracted to others. This attraction, sometimes called "chemistry", is often based on a person’s physical appeal. However, you may also be attracted to someone because he or she is kind, funny, smart, &/or because you share common interests. Whatever the reason for the attraction, you may feel flustered and nervous around this person.

Often when two people are attracted to each other, they may form romantic relationships and begin dating. They may even fall in love. Love is a very complex emotion, and romantic love is very different from the love you feel for your family and friends.

For the most part, the romantic relationships that you form in high school won’t likely be long term. You go through so much change during your teenage years and move towards adulthood.  Your priorities may change, as well as what you are looking for in a partner.

Dating in high school can be a lot of fun. Having a partner means you always have someone to go to movies with or to hang out with. A partner can be someone that you can talk to and share your dreams and aspirations with.

Healthy romantic relationships in high school can be a very positive experience, just as unhealthy relationships can be a negative experience. Every single relationship you have will impact you in some way, whether good or bad. If your partner is really outgoing, you will likely meet a lot of new people and in turn make new friends. However, if your partner is very controlling and wants you to spend every second with him or her, you are likely going to alienate yourself from your family and friends.

Some signs that you are in an unhealthy relationship include:

  • Your partner is very jealous or possessive.
  • Your partner tells you how to dress and behave.
  • Your partner is physically abusive.
  • Your partner forces or pressures you to have sex.
  • Your partner calls you names and makes your feel bad.
  • Your partner keeps you away from your family and friends.
Just as you have the ability to choose your friends in high school, you also have the ability to choose a romantic partner. If you are feel you are in an unhealthy relationship, you need to seek help. You can talk to a counsellor at the Kids Help Phone by calling 1-800-668-6868.
