This article in TeensHealth discusses what happens when a healthy relationships ends. There are many reasons why people break up, including growing apart. Regardless of the reason, many find it a difficult task to execute. They may avoid it or question if it is the right decision. It is normal to be confused and feel uncomfortable, because we don't want conflict or to hurt the other person.
TeensHealth offers advice around the Do's & Do Not's of breaking up, to help teens work through this process in a healthy way.
Do:
- Take your time & think about what you want and need
- Think about how the other person will feel and what you can say to help them understand your actions
- Talk through your process with a trusted friend first
- Ensure the other person knows they still matter
- Be honest, but kind
- Break up in person - this demonstrates respect. Using social media makes it difficult for the other person to ask questions and have closure
Do Not:
- Avoid the person. Creating distance or being unkind makes it harder for everyone involved
- Rush the conversation. Allow them the time they need to understand and avoid saying things you may regret
- Gossip and badmouth them to others. This will damage a possible friendship and create more drama and hurt feelings
What can you say and how you say it matters. Relationships may be long or short, but all have value. We can learn and grow from them. When they end we should be honest and kind.
