Responsibilities of Employees & Employers - Introduction
Completion requirements
UNIT 3

Did you know there are certain restrictions put on young persons (individuals aged fifteen to seventeen) according to the Employment Standards Code?
These restrictions apply to the following industries:
-
Retail
-
Food Service
-
Gas Stations
-
Lodging (hotels and motels)
As a young person, you are not allowed to work by yourself or with someone who isn't at least eighteen years of age between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. (midnight). You are not allowed to work between 12:00 a.m. (midnight) and 6:00 a.m., unless you have written consent from a parent or guardian and are with someone over the age of eighteen at all times.
Also, if you are under the age of sixteen, you cannot be employed during normal school hours, as you are required to attend school, with the exception of off-campus education programs such as Registered Apprenticeship Program, Work Experience, and the
Green Certificate Program.

Rights of Employees
As an employee, you have the same rights and responsibilities as adult employees under the Employment Standards Code. This includes overtime, minimum wage, and vacation pay.
Safety
It is the shared responsibility of employees and employers to make the job site safe. You need to do your part to ensure you are working in a safe manner, just as the employer needs to provide you with the proper training and equipment.
