Once you have decided on a career path, you need to determine what training or education you need after high school. There are some careers that you can start right after high school; however, many careers will require you to receive additional training or education. Any education or training that you pursue after high school is considered post-secondary.

Certificate

Certificate programs are typically one-year programs that prepare you for entry-level employment. Certificate programs are very diverse and can include areas such as medical transcription, office administration, and web development.

Diploma

Diploma programs are typically two-year programs that prepare you for entry-level positions. There are many diploma programs offered, including hospitality management, journalism, and respiratory therapy. Many diploma programs are highly competitive and attract university graduates looking for skill-specific training.

Apprenticeship

Registered apprentices are required to complete a specified number of hours of on-the-job training followed by technical training. The years of apprenticeship training to earn journeyperson certification can range from one to four years, depending on the program.

Bachelor’s (Undergraduate) Degree

Bachelor degree programs are typically four-year programs that allow learners to explore a number of different disciplines in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Students graduating with bachelor’s degrees can either enter the work force or continue their studies in a post-bachelor certificate, diploma, or degree program, or a Master’s (graduate) degree program.

Other

There are many other types of training available in different fields. Some examples are flight schools, vocational schools, continuing education courses, and seminaries.
