Lesson 2  Aromatic Hydrocarbons


Aromatic hydrocarbons are defined as benzene and all compounds that contain a benzene ring. Benzene and other aromatic compounds are found naturally in crude oil and natural gas and can be separated during refining. Benzene can be formed during the incomplete combustion of organic materials. Despite its link to cancer, benzene is used in many chemical processes. Below are images of some everyday products that contain aromatic hydrocarbons.
