Organic compounds occur in two main groups: hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon derivatives. As you learned in the previous module, hydrocarbons are organic compounds consisting only of carbon atoms and hydrogen atoms.
In contrast, a hydrocarbon derivative is an organic compound composed of carbon, hydrogen (usually), and at least one other element. Some common hydrocarbon derivatives include the following:
