Module 2

Lesson 1.1  Introducing the Halogenated Hydrocarbons (Alkyl Halides)

Key Concepts

Halogenated hydrocarbons, also known as organic halides and alkyl halides, are organic compounds in which one or more hydrogen atoms have been substituted by a halogen atom (X). The general formula for a halogenated hydrocarbon is R-X.  R represents a hydrocarbon.

Learning Tip

Halogenated hydrocarbons are known also as alkyl halides and organic halides.
