Lesson 4  Catalysts and Chemical Equilibrium Systems



Key Concepts


Catalysts decrease the time required to reach an equilibrium position. This is because catalysts (including enzymes) equally lower the activation energy for both the forward and reverse reactions. Because of this, the final equilibrium concentrations are reached in a shorter amount of time. For this reason, catalysts are very important in industry.


It is important to note that catalysts do not increase the yield of products, nor do they affect the  final position of equilibrium.
