Module 8

Lesson 3  Acids/Bases and the Equilibrium Law

In Module 7, you learned about the equilibrium constant, Kc. In this lesson, you will explore how chemists use equilibrium constants to communicate information about the relative strength of acids and bases.

Specifically, you will investigate the use of quantitative techniques to describe the equilibrium of aqueous acids and bases and investigate how the equilibrium influences the pH of both strong and weak acids and bases. In this lesson, you will investigate the following essential questions:

  • How do Ka and Kb communicate the position of the equilibrium of aqueous acids and bases?

  • How are values for Ka and Kb used to calculate the pH of solutions containing weak acids and bases?
