Lesson 4 — The Structure and Organization of the Nervous System

Lab - Sheep Brain Dissection

Introduction
The size and proportions of the various areas of the brain may differ among species, but the locations of various areas of the brain are similar. This investigation uses photographs to teach about the principal structures of the sheep brain.

Problem
What are the principal structures of the brain and what are their functions?

Materials
  • Gloves
  • Goggles
  • Dissection tray
  • Dissection tools
  • Sheep brain

Procedure
  1. Prepare the dissection tray and dissection tools on the bench.

  2. Place the sheep brain in the dissecting tray.

  3. Observe the brain. The three protective layers of meninges have been removed in this sheep brain. Identify the cerebrum, the two cerebral hemispheres, the cerebellum, and the spinal cord.

  5. Turn the brain to expose the bottom side. Identify the pituitary gland, the pons, the medulla oblongata, and the olfactory bulbs.

  7. Cut the brain into two lateral sections of left and right hemispheres. Identify the following structures: spinal cord, cerebellum, medulla oblongata, pons, midbrain, thalamus, hypothalamus, pituitary gland, corpus callosum, and cerebrum.
