Lesson 3 — Human Growth Hormone

Lesson Summary

The anterior pituitary produces and secretes human growth hormone (hGH), which stimulates fat metabolism, muscle and bone growth, and protein synthesis. Excessive secretion of hGH can result in gigantism and acromegaly. On the other hand, low secretion of hGH can result in dwarfism. Human growth hormone therapy is used to treat children of abnormally short stature. hGH may be used for non-medical reasons. For example, it has been used to enhance sports performance and as an anti-aging treatment.
