Lesson 4 — The Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands

Get Focused

Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism are opposite types of thyroid disorders. Individuals who have hyperthyroidism may feel too hot, experience weight loss, and find it difficult to concentrate. They may be jittery and hyperactive. Individuals who have hypothyroidism may feel cold,  may be overweight,  may feel lethargic, and may have trouble staying awake.

Overproduction of a parathyroid hormone causes loss of calcium from bones, which results in fragile and brittle bones and causes development of kidney stones.

This lesson explores the following focusing question:

  • How do the thyroid and parathyroid glands contribute to homeostasis?
