Lesson 2 — Embryonic Development
Get Focused
During previous lessons in this unit, you studied the structures and functions of the male and female reproductive systems as well as the hormones that cause the onset and development of these systems. This lesson presents the events that occur after fertilization, up to and including the development of the embryo, events lasting until the end of the eighth week.
You will learn to describe the process of embryonic development and name the major events and membrane formations that occur throughout embryonic development. You will identify the germ layers and the structures that arise from each layer.
The following focusing questions are addressed in this lesson:
-
What are the sequences of events and hormone controls that occur throughout embryonic development?
- What major tissues and organs arise from the ecto-, meso-, and endo-derm?
