Lesson 7 — Chromosomal Theory and Sex-linked Inheritance

Get Focused

Genetics does not always play equally with each sex. Likely, you have noticed more balding men than balding women. Perhaps you know of someone who is colour blind. Most likely that person is male. These examples indicate more than independent assortment. The suggestion is a link between the appearance of certain traits and sex.

In this lesson, you will  explore inheritance patterns that do not follow Mendel's laws. You will see how some traits occur more frequently in one sex than in the other and are said to be sex-linked.

This lesson examines two focusing questions:

  • Why do some traits appear more frequently in one sex rather than in the other?
  • How did the work of Thomas Hunt Morgan provide experimental support for the chromosomal theory of inheritance?
