Lesson 2 β€” DNA Replication

Watch and Listen

  1. The following animation is excellent at showing all steps described above. You may find that watching this clip a few times is worthwhile.  The animation shows DNA polymerase III adding nucleotides to the RNA primer laid down by primase and DNA polymerase I removing the primer and replacing it with DNA nucleotides.  You don't need to distinguish between the two in Biology 30 - just know that DNA polymerase adds nucleotides, removes the RNA primer and proofreads.

  2. This video shows specifically the 3' and 5' ends of the DNA during replication.

  3. Watch the following excerpt from the Biologix video DNA Structure and Replication:  Duplicating the Code for a thorough overview of DNA replication.

Try This

from lesson 1. You can now follow the Student Guide to the end. When you have finished the activity, try answering the multiple-choice assessment questions. Keep in mind the action of DNA polymerase and try to visualize where it is involved in this process. Think about where primase, helicase, DNA polymerase, and DNA ligase enter this simulation.
