Because the matter in the biosphere is finite, matter such as carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus is recycled in biogeochemical cycles. The basic building blocks for life move through living and non-living components of an ecosystem. If these cycles are disrupted, so is the balance of the ecosystem.
