When scientists study populations, they must be able to identify, classify, and name the species. The naming and classification systems in this module are the same systems used by ecologists all over the world. In order to share information and develop new knowledge together, scientists must have common methodologies and practices.
The first classification system was developed more than 2,000 years ago by Aristotle. As new species were found and scientists were able to observe characteristics with a greater degree of accuracy, the system morphed into the modern system that is used today.
